Last Week

Our last week wasn't so great... I will write a seperate post on it sometime this week, but basically we were at the vet's again. Africa might have EPI (Endocrinologic Pancreatic Insufficiency), basically meaning her pancreas is not working like it should... The good thing is, that it is easily treatable, but like the hypothyroidism, Afri will need medication for the rest of her life. But like said, I will go into more detail about that later!

Viime viikko ei ollut kovin mukava... Aion kirjoittaa asiasta oman postauksen, sillä muuten tämä olisi hullunpitkä. Lyhyesti sanottuna kuitenkin, olimme viime viikolla jälleen eläinlääkärin luona käymässä, ja saimme tietää, että Africalla on ehkä haiman vajaatoiminta eli EPI, tarkoittaen nimensä mukaisesti sitä, ettei haima toimi ihan niinkuin pitäisi... EPI on krooninen, mutta onneksi lääkityksellä hoidettavissa kuten kilpparikin, mutta Afri tarvitsee siis lääkitystä tätäkin varten koko loppuelämänsä. Kuten sanottu, kirjoitan asiasta myöhemmin vielä tarkemmin!

Ok, onto more positive things; for one, Africa is doing waaaay better! She has so much energy and is happy and more like herself. Her bald tail is bald no more, it is still rather thin, but we're getting there.:) And as the pictures might already reveal, we finally got to go to our forest, which has been way too long! But now finally, as of last week, construction in Heidelberg has stopped for the most part and things are more or less back to normal. 

No niin, eli sitten vähän positiivisempiin asioihin, kuten siihen, että Afri voi paaaljon paremmin! Afrilla on hirmupaljon energiaa, on iloinen ja enemmän oma itsensä. Kalju häntä on enää muisto vain (häntä on edelleen melko ohut, mutta kyllä se siitä!). Kuten kuvista voi päätellä, pääsimme jälleen rakkaaseen metsäämme ihan liian pitkästä aikaa! Mutta nyt vihdoinkin, Heidelbergissä ei enää ole tietöitä, joten rakentaminen on enemmän tai vähemmän loppunut, ja asiat ovat palautuneet normaaleiksi.

Afri has showed clear signs that she really wants to go to the forest to let off some steam. But because of the forest paths being barricaded, we haven't been able to do that for the past few weeks. Yesterday she was the happiest dog in the world and we had so much fun wandering in the forest and playing fetch! Afri has never particularly been into fetching (she does run after the stick, but usually doesn't bother bringing it back haha), but on Monday she was bringing me back every single stick I threw. She was really hyperactive and overexcited, I tried getting her to sit for a moment so I could take a facial shot of her, but no go haha. This little missy was so overwired, that she just sat there staring at me with the most annoyed expression and barking very frustratedly ("Why are you not throwing that stick????!! This is boorrrriiing!"). Thus, a lot of the pictures here are taken from further away, because Afri just wanted to run.

Africalla on selvästi ollut tarvetta päästä metsään, juuri tuon energisyyden vuoksi. Mutta koska metsän tiet olivat muutaman viimeisen viikon aikana blokattu, emme päässeet sinne. Nyt vihdoinkin eilen käppäiltiin metsälle ja neiti pääsi riehumaan kunnolla. Vaeltelimme metsässä ja noudettiin keppiä, Afri oli aivan onnessaan! Yleensä keppiä heitettäessä, Afri kyllä juoksee sen perään, muttei kyllä tuo takaisin heh. Eilen sensijaan Africa toi jokaikisen kepin, jonka sille heitin. :) Yritin epätoivoisesti ottaa neidistä naamakuvan, mutta Afri oli eri mieltä! Se oli niin ylivirittyneessä tilassa, että se tuijotti mua erittäin närkästyneesti ja haukkui turhautuneena ("Miksi et heitä sitä keppiä???! Ihan tylsää istua tässä!!"). Tämän vuoksi aika monet kuvat on otettu kauempaa, koska Afri ei oikein halunnut pysyä paikallaan.

Because at the moment, Afri has so much energy and is eager to do things, I've started again thinking about the agility course. :)

Koska neitosella on tällä hetkellä niin hirveästi energiaa ja selvästi taas halua tehdä kaikkea mahdollista, olen ruvennut miettimään taas sitä agility kurssia. :)

Hypothyroidism

Africa was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism shortly after we had left Finland to come back to Germany. During the summer I noticed that she had been asking for water a lot, which I had found slightly odd or well, unusual for her. Afri is the kind of dog, who does not drink. Ever since she was little, drinking wasn't "her thing". Thus usually I had to mix in quite a bit of water into her morning and evening meals so that she wouldn't get dehydrated.

The thing about her new sudden thirst didn't worry me at first too much; she had just started drinking like "normal" dogs. However, one day sometime at the end of September/ I noticed something odd about her tail whilst brushing Afri. Her hair was at parts very thin and short, plus you could see the skin. Her tail was never particularly big and fluffy, but now it looked really small and thin. I decided to keep an eye on it.

A week later, more hair had come off and you could see the outlines of the actual tail (as in minus hair). The skin did not look irritated nor itchy, so I was pretty sure it wasn't an allergy. A little bit of Googling revealed that the balding tail could possibly point to Hypothyroidism, which unfortunately amongst Hovawarts is not uncommon. Hovawarts are probably some of the most healthy dogs amongst dog breeds, but naturally no breed is perfect. Hypothyroidism is thankfully a relatively small thing comparing to some other dieseases, etc.

Naturally, we went to the vet to show Afri's tail and he was also relatively sure it was Hypothyroidism. Blood tests confirmed this and Afri started her medication 3 days after arriving in Germany. For the rest of her life she must eat a pill twice a day. This is thankfully the only "unpleasant" (if one must choose something) aspect of the disease. Otherwise she lives a perfectly normal life. We were told to take the first month easy after starting medication, so that her body has time to adjust to it properly. The medication is very cheap plus it is a chewy sort of tablet; no problems feeding it to her ;) Afri has been on the meds for almost a month, soon it's time to go to the vet's for a checkup just to see how the thyroxine and triiodothyronine-levels have improved and see if we need to increase/decrease the amount of meds. 

Hypothyroidism is a condition found in both people and animals. It basically means that one's thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroxine (T3) and triiodothyronine (T4). This causes fatigue, hair loss, weight gain to name a few symptoms.

Being Picky

Rain, rain, rain and some more rain. I love fall, but rain is something I highly dislike during that time. The nice thing is however, that we've been playing and training a lot inside. Afri loves it! :) We still haven't been able to get to our dear forest as there still seems to be a whole lot of construction going on in the whole of Heidelberg. 

Africa has decided that she doesn't like her food anymore. I don't know where this pickyness came from. She will eat a bit of it but then look at me with this expression, "Yea, uhhh you expect me to eat that? Pfff". At first I was worried that something was wrong (Afri is one of the greediest dogs I know), but then I noticed that she still was hungry, she just didn't want to eat HER own food. On some days I've mixed in a bit of boiled egg or Leberwurst (German stuff), and she has eaten a bit more. 

Sadetta, sadetta ja lisää sadetta. Rakastan syksyä, mutta siihen kuuluvaa sadetta en voi sietää. Ainoa kiva juttu on, että olemme sen vuoksi leikkineet ja treenanneet melko paljon sisällä, mistä Afri kovasti tykkää! :) Emme vieläkään ole päässeet rakkaaseen metsäämme, sillä puolet Heidelbergistä (metsät mukaanlukien) on edelleen työmaata.

Africa on päättänyt, ettei enää välitä nykyisestä ruuastaan. En tiedä mistä tämä nirsous yhtäkkiä on tullut, sillä kyseessä on yksi ahneimpia tuntemiani koiria. Neiti maistelee hieman ja sen jälkeen tuijottaa minua vähän sellasella, "Niin siis, sä oletat, että mun pitäisi syödä toi? Pyh!"-ilmeellä. Ensin pelkäsin, että jotain on vialla (like said, maailman ahnein koira). Toisaalta huomasin, että Afri oli edelleen nälkäinen, OMA ruoka ei vaan kelvannut. Olen nyt muutamina päivinä sekoittanut ruokaan pikkasen keitettyä munaa tai maksamakkaraa, jonka avulla se on syönyt hieman enemmän.

Picky? Me? Pffft!

Thing is, I can't change her dog food, as she has such an incredibly sensitive stomach. This is the one food brand that has worked PERFECTLY for her; her stomach's been doing great always here in Germany thanks to this food. So you probably understand why I'd be not too keen on changing it. Afri eats a different food brand in Finland, which unfortunately cannot be bought here. It has taken years to find her a suitable food brand and Real Nature's Black Angus gluten-free food has been perfect. I guess I'll have to start mixing in a bit of cottage cheese to make it more tasty for her.

I've probably mentioned that her energy levels have started to normalize and she has been as hyper as usual.:) Today we've been playing and training inside in the morning, which she greatly enjoyed! Made me rather happy too, think the medication has started to work, yay! Also the hair on her tail has started growing (it still looks a bit sad, but we're getting there!) back, so hopefully I'll have my fluffy tailed pooch back soon!

Koska kyseessä on myös maailman herkkävatsaisin koira, en viitsi ruokintaa ruveta muuttelemaan. Tai siis juttu on niin, että nyt on vihdoinkin löytynyt sellainen ruokamerkki, joka on oikeasti ollut TÄYDELLINEN Afrille; masu on ollut koko Saksassa olon ajan kunnossa tämän ruuan ansiosta. Sen vuoksi varmaankin ymmärrettävää miksi en rupea ruokintaa muuttelemaan. Suomessa Afri syö eri ruokamerkkiä, jota valitettavasti ei (tietääkseni) Saksasta saa. Kesti vuosia ennenkuin oikeasti löydettiin sellainen ruokamerkki, joka ei pistänyt mahaa ihan kuralle ja se on tällä hetkellä gluteeniton Real Naturen Black Angus. Pitää kait ruveta sekoittelemaan hieman raejuustoa sekaan makua parantamaan.

Olen jo varmaan aiemmin maininnut, että Afrin energiatasot ovat ruvenneet nousemaan jo suht normaaleihin lukemiin ja se on taas oma villi itsensä.:) Meillä oli tänään yhdessä mukava aamu, kun treenattiin ja leikittiin iloisesti. Oma fiilis myös hyvä, tuntuu, että lääkintä on vihdoin ruvennut kunnolla puremaan, jee! Lisäksi hännän karvat ovat ruvenneet kasvamaan takaisin, eli toivon mukaan saan takaisin ihanan karvahäntäni!

Happy Halloween!

I know, I know a day late, but yesterday I didn't have time to post anything, so here we go. :) Halloween has been celebrated and November's begun. Crazyness, since Christmas is soon! Afri, being the little devil that she is, decided to go as one. Cute, huh? I think the horns fit her perfectly ha!

Juu, päivän myöhässä, mutta eilen en kertakaikkiaan kerennyt pistämään tänne mitään, mutta tässä nyt sitten ollaan. :) Halloweenia vietettii eilen ja Marraskuu on alkanut. Käsittämätöntä, että kohta on Joulu! Afri, pieni pirulainen päätti tänä Halloweenina "pukeutua" sen mukaisesti. Aika söpö, eikös? Minusta sarvet sopivat neitokaiselle oikein hyvin ha!

Seems that whenever I use pictures taken with my tablet, I cannot get them aligned the way I'd want to. I intended for both of these pictures to be next to each other, but they refuse to obey haha.                                                                                                                                            Jostain syystä aina kun pistän tänne kuvia, jotka on otettu tabletillani, ne eivät koskaan oikein tahdo mennä/jäädä siihen kohtaan mihin olen yrittänyt ne iskeä. Tässäkin postauksessa kuvien oli tarkoitus olla vierekkäin, mutta ne eivät suostuneet tottelemaan haha.
